University of Minnesota researchers are being commended for a big research discovery in HIV/AIDS research. Professor Louis Mansky and his research team have found that two cancer drugs, decitabine and gemicitabine, can essentially force HIV to mutate at a much higher rate and to kill itself off. U of M Center for Drug Design researcher Steve Patterson says that in combination at doses much lower than is used for cancer chemotherapy, these drugs work in their models very well. The drugs are already approved by the FDA, which should speed up the process in their being used for treating HIV. Plenty more research needs to be done. The drugs are currently given by and IV, and the researchers want to put them into a pill form. Clinical trials and the long-term side effects of the drugs need to be determined.

Tom Kuczmarski, president of Chicago-based management consulting firm Kuczmarski & Associates announced the award along with co-founder of the Chicago Innovation Awards.

Abbott Laboratories was recognized since it devised the nation’s first test that could detect both HIV antigen and antibodies simultaneously. The result is much faster than other rival tests. HIV antigen is a protein that the virus produces right after infection. Antibodies, on the other hand, develop much later as the body works to fight the infection.

Medical experts are of the opinion that one in four people who get infected with HIV are not aware of it. 50 percent of transmissions come from people who do not know that they’ve been infected.

Known as the Architect HIV Ag/Ab Combination test, Abbott’s innovation is aimed at spotting the virus up to 20 days earlier as compared to other tests. This has helped stem the spread of the virus earlier than ever before.

Studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that antibody-only tests miss up to 10 percent of HIV infections in a few high-risk groups. This is mainly because the body’s immune system fails to produce antibodies. Abbott’s test also yielded fewer “false positives” in clinical trials.

Dr. Peter Leone, medical director of the North Carolina HIV/STD Prevention and Control Branch at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill said: “A significant percentage of new HIV infections are transmitted by someone with an undetected acute infection, so identifying more people earlier offers a significant opportunity for counseling, which can reduce high-risk behaviors and also initiate antiretroviral treatment for early-stage infection, if appropriate”

Approved by the U.S Food & Drug Administration, the test has is already being offered in several Chicago-based hospitals.

Without treatment, the HIV virus triggers AIDS faster in women than in men; but sometimes it can depend on the straight of the body before the infection. For instance, a non-smoking female, who does not drink alcohol as a habit, has a healthy diet and did not consumed drugs during her health period, is most likely to develop AIDS a lot slower than a man who has done all that.

Honestly speaking, getting or having HIV is the most stressful and embarrassing situation one can encounter. Although this disease has been showcased in many media-based programs on TV as well as on the internet, there are a lot of individuals who are still unaware of HIV and its effects to the body. In relation to this, it’s recommended that sexually active individuals should take an HIV test. You may visit a doctor in a local clinic or purchase reliable testing devices like elisa kits.

HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is a disease that gradually destroys human’s immune system. According to WHO (World Health Organization), HIV is now considered as pandemic. Prior to its discovery in 1981, HIV had already killed 25 million people or almost 0.6 percent of the world’s population. You may think that HIV and AIDS are just the same, but actually they are not. To explain it clearly, HIV is a virus that belongs to a group known as retrovirus. Now, once this virus spreads and multiplies all over the body, doctors will then classify it as AIDS.

How can the doctor tell if you’re HIV positive?

First and foremost, the doctor will conduct a series of tests. These tests will determine whether you have HIV infection. After that, your blood will be tested using elisa test kits. ELISA or (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) test is a biochemical technique used in immunology. This test is conducted to determine the reaction of chemicals inside the body.

Once the test is positive for HIV, your blood will be tested once again this time with the use of western blot testing device. If elisa test and western blot test are both positive, then you’re diagnosed with HIV.

Symptoms of HIV:
•    Dry cough
•    Rapid weight loss
•    Memory loss, depression and other neurological disorders
•    Pneumonia
•    Recurring fever
•    White spots or unusual blemishes on the tongue, mouth and throat

Prevention is better than cure is an old yet golden saying that everyone should consider. Early diagnosis is the key to early detection and medication. There are a lot of medical testing gadgets available in the market and elisa kits are good examples. In case you have no time to visit the doctor, you can use these kits. Don’t let HIV infection destroy your future, take an HIV test now!
