As it has been observed, long-distance truck drivers among various parts of the world have been observed to be prone more often to HIV infections as a result of the nature of their work. Being separated from their families and the community for long period, they end-up abandoning moral values and engage in anti-social behaviors along their journeys. More specifically, such long-distance truck drivers often engage in unhealthy commercial sexual affairs without use of protective devices like condoms; making them more vulnerable to contacting HIV. In this respect therefore, the need for participation on this particular issue has been necessitated by the currently experienced high level of victims of HIV among the long distance truck drivers along the Brazil’s Southern Border.

Purpose

The main purpose of this research is to enhance the development of outreach strategies to overcome the lack of participation in the currently observed crisis in the Southern Brazil Border among the truck drivers. More specifically, the long-distance truck drivers within this border have been found to be more prone to HIV due to their long separation with their families; hence opting for commercial sex on the course of their works. On this basis therefore, this research purposes to devise means and ways of reducing the vulnerability of these truck drivers to HIV Aids.

Background Information

According to data collected by the “Population Council” in 2001, truck drivers crossing Brazil’s border have been found to have easy access to commercial sex and are extremely limited to access of health services. As a result, many of them engage in unsafe sexes in which they later-on lack time to access health services for HIV testing. More so, such drivers usually have been found to lack access to guidance and counseling services and HIV/STI prevention messages which exposes them to more dangers of re-infection. This really enhances the acuity of the HIV infection making them to die within short periods after being infected (Cracknell, 2000).

Theoretical Framework

As depicted by Maser (1996), separation of individuals for long breaks some bonds of love and care that usually exist when these individuals are together. Frequent separations of individuals from their families and their community drive individuals into some kind of stress and psychological problems. More specifically, once an individual finds no time to settle with his/her family, he tends to seek pleasurable activities to counter the stress. As a result, most of individuals who are frequently separated from their families attend to seek pleasure activities like sexual affairs and alcohol taking. On this basis therefore, most of the workers who usually have not time with their families and communities making them more vulnerable to unsafe and immoral activities (Criag, 2002).

Further, peer influences among co-workers have been found to impact a lot on individuals’ behavior. In this case, those individuals who usually work with other people who often engage into unhealthy activities usually compel them to engage into the same activities. For instance, as a trucker driver, it is usually very easy for one to be dragged into immoral activities by their fellow drivers. Generally, peer group influences have been found to be very powerful in changing behaviors among individuals (Trochim, 2002).

Methodology

Conduction of a literature review on moral development among individuals in the society and factors resulting into ignoring morals values among the people.
Interact with truck drivers to understand their behaviors better and deeper.
Interview some of truck drivers along the Southern Brazil Border to understand their behaviors better.
Visit ten Hospitals within the Southern Brazil Border to enquire any statistics related to the number of HIV victims who had been previously working as truck behaviors. An interview would also be conducted to some of the HIV victims in the hospitals to determine their ultimate source of the infection.
The National Statistics Bureau would be contacted in order to get precise information about the behavior of the truck drivers along the Southern Brazil Border.
Situational analysis would be undertaken in order to develop credible report about HIV intervention among truck drivers in Brazil southern border.
Writing a research report based on the facts collected as a result of the empirical research carried out.
Limitations of this research

This research is prone to fund shortages as it involves a lot of movements from one place to another. More so, the respondents involved in the process of carrying out the data collection may not respond as intended. This is because, some of them may withhold some information concerning their moral behaviors; fearing to be exposed.

Solutions

The problems identified have been planed to be solved through various ways. First, the movements from one station to another would be limited by conducting all the research from one station without returning back. Concerning the problem of response from the respondents, it would be solve through assuring the respondents of the confidentiality of the data given.
