MeTee: Tee-Shirt Design in Seconds. – Human immunodeficiency virus / acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a disease of the human immune system caused by infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). During the initial infection a person may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness. This is typically followed by a prolonged period without symptoms. As the illness progresses it interferes more and more with the immune system, making the person much more likely to get infections, including opportunistic infections, and tumors that do not usually affect people who have working immune systems. HIV is transmitted primarily via unprotected sexual intercourse (including anal and even oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Some bodily fluids, such as saliva and tears, do not transmit HIV. Prevention of HIV infection, primarily through safe sex and needle-exchange programs, is a key strategy to control the spread of the disease. – Subscribe for Breaking News. Even though everyone is at risk for HIV, people who have sex or share needles and syringes with an infected person are more likely to get the HIV virus. HIV attacks the body’s immune system — the white blood cells. HIV may cause AIDS — Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. When people with HIV get serious diseases, they are said to have AIDS. There are four main stages in the progression of an HIV infected person developing AIDS There are only 4 main ways that HIV can be spread: • From infected sexual fluids • From infected blood or blood products • From infected mother to her baby during pregnancy and birth • Sharing of needles for injection There are myths that need to be squashed like — HIV spreads by sitting with an infected person in the same room or HIV cannot spread from a person who loves someone. Myth #1: I shouldn’t work or be friends with someone who’s HIV positive because I might get it. Myth #2: I can’t get HIV from my boyfriend or girlfriend because I know this person loves me, and I trust him or her. Myth #3: There’s a cure for HIV and AIDS. Myth #4: I don’t want to be tested, because if I find out I have HIV, my life is over anyway. Myth #5: I won’t get HIV because I’m straight and I don’t use IV drugs.
