Reggie Jackson is the team leader for a mobile Syringe Exchange Program that operates out of an RV in Washington, DC. The program provides clean needles to drug users in order to prevent the spread of AIDS/HIV and other blood borne diseases. This is especially significant given the high rate of AIDS/HIV in the District. Reggie is a former drug addict and has been living with AIDS/HIV and hepatitis C for 22 years. He uses his experiences to counsel the addicts that come to the RV to exchange their used needles for clean ones. See www.preventionworksdc.org for more information. In South Africa, cultural dismissal of AIDS is making any advances against the disease almost impossible. A group of young Zulu women form an orderly queue. They are waiting to have their virginity tested and to check that they are free from AIDS. To have AIDS is a disgrace, and most blacks, especially men, don’t believe the disease really exists. ‘Cures’ for AIDS include having sex with a virgin, leading to 1 in 3 children in South Africa being abused. Until attitudes change, the pandemic will continue to grow. For more information, visit: www.journeyman.tv February 2004

This video explains how HIV positive people can have children, reduce or eliminate the risk that their partner will contract HIV, and minimize the risk that the child will contract HIV. HIV positive people should avoid unprotected sex. But they can still have children. An HIV positive man can provide a semen sample to his doctor. A technique called sperm washing is used to ensure that any HIV in the seminal fluid around the sperm is removed. An egg is removed from the woman, fertilized by the washed sperm outside the body via in vitro fertilization, and the fertilized egg is placed into her uterus. If a woman is HIV positive, her partner can provide a sperm sample which is then placed into her body.
